Broken Chanter, the brand new project from Kid Canaveral’s David MacGregor releases debut single Wholesale.
I’m not sure if David or anyone from Kid Canaveral remembers but we interviewed them a good few years ago in Ironworks in Inverness and it was one of our most embarrassing interviews ever. This was clearly not the fault of the band but a series of events that started with low battery lights flashing on the mini disc recorder, replacing them with more duff batteries and then stumbling my way through my questions red faced the entire time. Kid Canaveral were very cool and I was clearly not.
At the start of this year I met David again at the Olive Grove Records showcase during Celtic Connections in Glasgow and was delighted to hear that he had new music coming out and also looking to do some shows with Broken Chanter, including a date back in Inverness during Xpo North on 3rd/4th July and a Netsounds show in September.
Debut single, Wholesale builds with chiming guitar loops and pulsating synths and Audrey Tait’s (Hector Bizerk, The Miss’s) pounding drum beat. The track also features harmonies from Jill O’Sullivan (Sparrow and the Workshop, bdy_prts).
Wholesale was captured in a damp, forgotten cottage on the Isle of Skye. Towards the end of Winter 2018, MacGregor isolated himself in spots around the Highlands and Islands, recording skeletal demos in Ardnamurchan and Skye before decamping to a remote house on a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic from County Donegal.
Wholesale will be released through Last Night From Glasgow and Olive Grove Records on 24 May 2019 as a digital download and limited edition 7″ lathe-cut vinyl.
Broken Chanter’s eponymous debut album is due for release in September 2019.
