Fiddles, Flair, and Folk Magic: Anna Massie and RANT Launch Under Canvas Sessions 2025 in Style
Opening the ‘Under Canvas Sessions 2025’ on Wednesday, July 2nd, was the esteemed ‘Blackisle Correspondent’ Anna Massie. A multi-instrumentalist, multi-award-winning musician, producer, and presenter, Anna is a deeply respected figure in the Scottish traditional music scene, having collaborated with virtually every notable artist.
Her vast experience was immediately evident in her solo set, peppered with captivating stories and sharp wit. As MOJO magazine once observed, her arrangements are ‘…lively, often witty…compelling at the heart’ – a sentiment I wholeheartedly echo.
Rant
Following Anna were the four-piece Scottish fiddle legends, Rant, whose members hail from diverse regions across Scotland, from Shetland to Arran.
Active for approximately ten years, Rant has garnered significant acclaim playing across Scotland, the UK, Ireland, and Scandinavia. What immediately struck me about their set was the incredible layering and texture of their sound, particularly given that they utilize only fiddles.
This intricate musicality, which captivated the audience, likely reflects the diverse influences of the band members, extending beyond traditional Scottish fiddlers to the broader folk music scene. Rant delivered a superb performance, leaving the audience thoroughly engaged and marking a fantastic start to the ‘Under Canvas’ sessions.
