Broken Chanter’s stunning debut album via Last Night From Glasgow and Olive Grove Records.
The eponymous debut album from Broken Chanter (solo guise of David MacGregor – principal songwriter of Scottish Alt-Pop darlings Kid Canaveral) – will be released through Last Night From Glasgow and Olive Grove Records on 6 September 2019.
In the middle of the wild Winter of 2018, MacGregor isolated himself in spots around the Highlands and Islands of his native Scotland, recording skeletal demos in Ardnamurchan and Skye, before decamping with long-term pal/collaborator, engineer and producer Gal, and drummer par excellence Audrey Tait, to a remote house on a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic from County Donegal. They spent the first fortnight of February surrounded by spectacular views, and even more spectacular weather, working on what would become the debut Broken Chanter record.
The record opens with almost ambient and cinematic Nineteen Ninety-Eight and gently rolls into the poignant waltz of Should We Be Dancing? which David recorded for us in session during this year’s XpoNorth in Inverness. You can see the session below along with a live version of another album track, Don’t Move to Denmark. The album beautifully marries MacGregor’s storytelling with the landscapes of where it was written and recorded.
The album features a stellar cast of performers who helped bring MacGregor’s compositions to life: Audrey Tait (Hector Bizerk, The Girl Who Cried Wolf); Jill O’Sullivan (Sparrow and the Workshop, bdy_prts, Jill Lorean); Emma Kupa(Mammoth Penguins, Standard Fare); Kim Carnie (BBC Young Trad Musician of the Year Finalist 2017); Hannah Shepherd (eagleowl, Our Ladies of Sorrow, Withered Hand); Gal (Galchen); and Gav Prentice (ULTRAS, Over the Wall) who also co-wrote Free Psalm and Cheering in the Distance.
Broken Chanter is released via Last Night From Glasgow and Olive Grove Records on 6 September 2019.
